Removing Solar Panels For A New Roof
If your roof needs replacing, the panels have to come off and go back on. The industry calls this detach and reset. It is a real project with its own cost, permits, and risks, so plan it before the roofer starts.
What Detach And Reset Involves
- A solar contractor shuts down the system and disconnects the wiring.
- The panels and racking come off and are stored.
- The roofer replaces the roof.
- The solar contractor reinstalls the racking and panels, reconnects the system, and arranges any inspection.
What It Costs
Solar Gardens guide to panel removal and reinstallation puts base labor at $275 to $300 per panel, which works out to about $8,250 to $9,000 for 30 panels, and notes that off-site storage can add $300 to $500. NRG Clean Power guide to removal and reinstall costs estimates $200 to $350 per panel in California in 2026 and says that removing and reinstalling later can cost $4,000 to $10,000 or more. Tile roofs, steep pitches, two story homes, and older corroded hardware can raise the price. Treat these as ranges from two sources and get local itemized quotes.
Permits, Licensing, And Timing
- Garden's guide says most areas require an electrical permit for reinstalling a system, even if the layout does not change. Ask who pulls the permit.
- NRG Clean Power says that in California a roofer holding only a roofing license cannot remove and reinstall solar. Licensing rules differ by state, so check yours.
- NRG estimates 1 to 3 weeks offline for a shingle roof and longer for tile, and suggests scheduling in fall or winter to reduce lost production.
Protect Your Warranties
The NRG guide says panel and inverter warranties usually survive a reinstall, but labor and third party damage generally do not, and that Tesla says using a third party contractor may void the existing system warranty. The Garden guide says uncertified reinstallation can void panel and inverter warranties and advises asking any contractor for credentials. Both guides say to call your original installer first, and Garden notes that many workmanship warranties cover detach and reset labor when removal is tied to a roof replacement. Ask For This In Writing
- An itemized quote that separates labor, permits, storage, and hardware
- Who is responsible if a panel cracks or a roof leak appears at a penetration
- A written scope you can send to your insurance company if the roof work is part of a claim
- Who tests the system and confirms it is producing afterward
Before You Lock In The Roof Job
Ask the roofer how they handle solar penetrations and flashing on the new roof. Take dated photos of the array and your monitoring data before the work, and compare after. See Solar Monitoring, Repair, And Inspection for what a post-work check covers.
